Learn Step-by-Step
Module 1: Address What’s Bothering You (Without Shutting Down Yourself or Your Partner)
I begin by teaching The Gentle Start-Up, a technique rooted in research to help you bring up issues without causing a fight. You’ll learn how to identify the right time and place using the HALT method (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) and explore when to communicate verbally or in writing. With practical skills in assertive communication, you’ll be able to express yourself clearly and confidently, without shutting down or escalating conflict.
Module 2: Respond Without Defensiveness (Even When You Disagree)
In this module, you’ll discover mindful communication techniques to help you pause, breathe, and respond calmly rather than react. You’ll also learn the powerful skill of finding one thing you can agree with in your partner’s perspective. By mastering the art of validation without agreeing, you’ll be able to acknowledge your partner’s emotions without feeling like you’re compromising your own beliefs, setting a foundation for trust and empathy.
Module 3: Find Common Ground (On the Issues That Keep Coming Up)
This module is about bridging gaps and creating shared understanding. You’ll learn how to unpack the story behind your partner’s position, using curiosity to gain empathy. You’ll explore your core values and use a concentric circles exercise to identify non-negotiables and areas of flexibility. With these tools, you’ll be able to compromise in ways that feel authentic, bringing you closer together on issues that once divided you.
Module 4: Take a Break (Without Rupturing Things Further)
Sometimes the most respectful move is to step back. Here, you’ll learn how to notice your own triggers and understand when and how to ask for a break. This module teaches you what to do during the break to regulate yourself and prepare to come back to the conversation with a clear, calm mind. With these tools, you’ll be able to pause tough conversations without risking further disconnect or resentment.
Module 5: Repair After a Fight (Even When You’ve Gone Too Far)
In this final module, you’ll gain the skills to mend emotional wounds and repair trust. Starting with a reflective journaling practice, you’ll learn how to process your own feelings before re-engaging. You’ll master techniques for co-regulation and learn the value of seeking first to understand before jumping to solutions. By the end of this module, you’ll have tools to help you and your partner come back together even after the toughest arguments.
Even if your partner isn’t the type to dive into a course, the skills you learn here will still transform your relationship.
